The English along with Welsh Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks before the final, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
