Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any significant honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
