Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
